A Close Call - How To Keep Your GoPro Secure

Updated: Jul 14, 2020

I think we mentioned before to watch out for monkeys didn't we? Perhaps one of the most mischievous and nasty of the bunch (in our opinion) has to be the macaque! Yes, the same ones found at the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud.

One particular encounter that comes to mind was when we were in Sri Lanka and were just getting our stuff ready to climb Sigiriya Rock. As we got out of the van, we spotted the cutest little guy sitting in a tree above the walkway that headed out towards the rock. So naturally we had to stop and take a video.

As you can see in the video, we were lucky to walk away with our GoPro in hand. We really didn't feel like chasing after a monkey to get our GoPro back. Not in that heat!

So if you are in monkey territory and feel like popping out the GoPro to take some videos, here are some of our must have accessories to use to keep your expensive camera from getting snatched. May all your monkey encounters be forever memorable and pain free!

Must Have GoPro Accessories:

  • Our favorite handheld mount is definitely The Handler floating grip. It's great for use on land and in the water and you can attach it firmly to your wrist as well. We've tried other floating grips, but they make too much noise when filming and the noise is then heard in the audio which is not cool. No such problems with this grip.

  • If you want to get up close and personal with the little critters without getting your GoPro snatched, you could try the Chesty. We haven't tried it on our monkey adventures, but we think you could get some cool close up shots. We'd advise against the head strap as you really don't want monkeys angrily trying to snatch your GoPro from your head.

  • Our carrying case of choice is the Casey. It's an official GoPro case and holds your gear properly and protects it well, inside your backpack and out. Definitely a worthwhile investment for an expensive piece of equipment.
