We have had some interesting experiences with monkeys during our many travels. Our favorite place to visit the little critters so far has to be in the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud, Indonesia. If you find yourself in Ubud, you should definitely plan on visiting. However, you need to prepare before you decide to go in for a visit. If you aren't prepared, you may end up having an experience you may very well want to forget!

Some tips:

  • Don't have anything in your pockets! The monkeys will search you for food and anything else they can grab.

  • Don't bring in food! Don't buy bananas from vendors once you are in the forest. Just sit back and watch the show as other silly tourists mess around with food in front of the monkeys.

  • Resist the urge to touch the monkeys. They have big teeth and can get aggressive.

  • Don't have anything hanging off of your body that you don't mind losing. The monkeys will grab and run away with anything they can get their hands on.

  • Keep a tight grip on your camera and GoPro. They will try and take it.

  • If the monkeys do approach you, let them do their thing and don't get excited or you may get bitten.

  • If you bring in a backpack, they will try and get into it. Leave it at your hotel if you can.
